Software Engineering Lead

Remedy ScientificOakland, CA

About The Position

Remedy is a seed-stage startup committed to addressing the planet’s enormous challenge of environmentally contaminated land. Our mission is to build massively scalable, automated soil remediation solutions to return contaminated land to productive use. We do this by developing and deploying novel integrated chemical, hardware, and software systems that destroy harmful pollutants. Position Summary We are hiring a Software Engineering Lead to design and build the core software systems and backend foundation of Remedy’s platform. This is a hands-on role for a senior backend engineer who wants full ownership of system design and implementation, and who is comfortable operating with high autonomy, limited process and evolving requirements. You will set the technical direction for the backend, write a large portion of the early production code, and establish the engineering standards the team will build on. Over time, this role may grow into an engineering management or head-of-software position, but today the priority is building.

Requirements

  • Backend engineering lead who owns architecture and execution while writing a large amount of production code
  • Experience designing systems that progressively transform messy, real-word inputs (data, documents, workflows) into reliable, structured representations
  • API and service design skills to support customer-facing reporting workflows and downstream consumers
  • Experience deploying and operating model-serving systems that integrate ML outputs into product features
  • Deep fluency with Python and TypeScript in production, including testing, maintainability, and performance tradeoffs
  • Experience with data modeling - relational databases, object storage, and search/indexing for document-heavy systems
  • Comfortable building on GCP with practical knowledge of deployment, stability, cost, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an early or first engineer at a startup
  • Background in scientific, data-intensive, or regulated environment
  • Experience with front end UI (website design/maintenance)
  • Experience creating data models with chemical/geospatial datasets
  • Experience with GIS integration
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and monitoring tools

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and own Remedy’s backend systems and how workflows are modeled in software from the ground up
  • Architect APIs, services, and data models that support complex, evolving workflows
  • Write production code daily and stay directly involved in all critical backend paths
  • Set and evolve technical direction through pragmatic architectural tradeoffs in a fast-moving, early-stage environment
  • Establish backend engineering best practices around testing, reviews, deployments, and observability
  • Work closely with product, scientific, and frontend collaborators to translate real needs into reliable backend solutions
  • Lay the groundwork for future engineers through clear code, documentation, and systems
