Program Overview: The Sallie Mae Internship program seeks to attract and develop exceptional early talent while adding value to our organization. Our goal is to tie academic learning into a practical business setting while fostering professional and personal growth within a student’s area of focus. Over the course of the summer, interns will gain exposure to senior leaders, attend meetings, work alongside mentors, and receive valuable performance feedback. What You'll Contribute: The intern will play a key role in supporting the development and implementation of engineering projects. This position involves collaboration with cross-functional teams and contributes to driving technical excellence across the organization. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, technically curious, and ready to engage in real-world problem-solving in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or related technical field
  • Open to undergraduate and graduate level students with expected graduation dates of Dec 2026 - May 2027
  • Availability: This is a 10-week internship and expectations for a 40-hour work week for the following dates 5/26/26-7/31/2026. We follow a 3-day flexible in office policy in Indianapolis office; designated housing is included in offer package for the internship dates outlined above.
  • Strong understanding of programming fundamentals with experience in one or more languages (Python, C#, JavaScript, Java, or similar)
  • Understanding of database concepts and working with structured data
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and data pipelines
  • Self-motivated with strong initiative and curiosity about technology
  • Adaptability and openness to learning
  • Interest in enterprise-scale technology challenges and solutions
  • Professional demeanor suitable for interaction with IT leadership and business stakeholders

Nice To Haves

  • Previous internship experience in technology preferred.
  • Experience with data movement processes such as ETL (Extract, Transform, Load)
  • Familiarity with Informatica or similar data integration tools (e.g., Talend, DataStage, SSIS)

Responsibilities

  • Support the execution of engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
  • Assist in developing and implementing engineering solutions using industry’s best practices and relevant tools and technologies.
  • Conduct testing and quality assurance to validate the reliability, performance, and functionality of deliverables.
  • Provide technical support and assist in troubleshooting issues encountered during project development and execution.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including product management, design, and operations—to ensure alignment and successful outcomes.
  • Clearly communicate project updates, risks, and challenges to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.
