Primary Function of Position The Ion™ endoluminal system is Intuitive's new robotic platform for minimally invasive biopsy in the peripheral lung, with an initial goal of improving the early diagnosis of lung cancer. As a Software Engineering Intern (GUI), you will support the design and development of graphical user interface (GUI) elements, ranging from more traditional 2D GUI’s to interactive 3D virtual environments. In this role you will work closely with designers, clinical engineers, and other software developers to create world-class user experiences for the Ion platform to positively impact physician experience and patient outcomes. The ideal candidate is an independent and fast-paced software developer with excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for good software architecture and processes, capable of producing robust, high-quality code. This internship is ideal for graduate students seeking hands-on experience in medical device software and user interface development.

  • Work as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced, start-up-like business unit.
  • Assist in prototyping new GUI elements and workflows in C++ and QML, contributing ideas and rapid iterations.
  • Design and execute analyses and experiments to evaluate different potential solutions.
  • Present findings and progress to the team; contribute to documentation.
  • University Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking academic program after the internship.
  • Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) during a 10-12 week period starting May or June. Specific start dates are shared during the recruiting process.
  • Current enrollment in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineer or related degree-seeking program at the Master’s or Doctorate (preferred) level.
  • Proficient in C++
  • Experience with graphics libraries such as OpenGL or OpenSceneGraph
  • Knowledge of parallel programming or GPU programming (e.g. Cuda)
  • Exposure to game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine
  • Experience working with imaging libraries (e.g., ITK, VTK, OpenCV) or medical image analysis
  • Familiarity with software development methodologies or tools (CI, version control, issue tracking)
  • Exposure to linux
