About The Position

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. We are looking for a software engineer to join our effort in building the next generation of retrieval technology, fusing full-text and semantic (embedding vector similarity) search. This is a high-visibility product requested by Spanner's largest internal customers. In this role, you will work with Technical Leads across Spanner, internal and external customers to understand scenarios and requirements hybrid retrieval. You will partner with engineers across various Spanner teams to design, implement and land new capabilities that enable the largest Google services to bring in new workloads onto Spanner and accelerate the existing ones. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree in an industry setting.
  • 2 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.
  • 2 years of experience in C++, Java, or Go, with a focus on high-performance, low-latency code.
  • Experience designing and developing relational databases, database internals, information retrieval, query planning and execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience with query compilers, plan generation, and execution engines.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.
  • Knowledge of GQL or Cypher.
  • Understanding of concurrency control, consensus algorithms (e.g., Paxos), and data replication strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Write product or system development code.
  • Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
  • Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
  • Design and develop new ISO GQL features (e.g., DML, DQL, DDL) and query engine performance optimizations for Spanner Graph.
  • Work with internal and external customers and Go-to-Market (GTM) team to enable deployment of production solutions.
