As a Software Engineer Principal within PNC's C&IB organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA or Dallas, TX. As a Software Engineering Principal you will play a critical technical leadership role in designing, building, and evolving large-scale, business critical platforms. This role is ideal for a hands-on technical leader who can influence architecture, mentor engineers, and clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both engineering and executive audiences. Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in Java, with deep hands-on experience using Spring Boot, Hibernate, RESTful services, and microservices architectures.
  • Solid understanding of software architecture principles, including microservices, domain-driven design concepts, and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience designing and developing solutions using: o Core Java o SQL (MySQL or equivalent) o Messaging and streaming platforms such as ActiveMQ and Kafka
  • Hands-on expertise with authentication and authorization mechanisms, API frameworks (REST, GraphQL), and persistence layers.
  • Proven experience in database design, optimization, and data modeling, across both relational (SQL) and NoSQL data stores.
  • Successful candidates must demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities for a role.

  • Roles at this level typically require a university / college degree, with 5+ years of industry-relevant experience.
  • Specific certifications are often required.
  • In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education, job specific certification(s), and experience (including military service) may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the Akka framework and actor-based or reactive system design.
  • Experience working with MongoDB or similar document-oriented databases.
  • Domain experience in Payments, transaction processing, or high throughput financial systems is a strong plus.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and Redis.
  • Strong knowledge of performance tuning, application security, and scalability best practices.
  • Experience working within modern Agile frameworks, with SAFe experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies such as React (hands-on experience is a plus).
  • Experience with DevOps and cloud-native practices, including: o CI/CD pipelines o Containerization and orchestration (OpenShift, Kubernetes)
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as Bitbucket, Jenkins, and related platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical authority and hands-on contributor for complex, distributed systems supporting C&IB business capabilities.
  • Lead architecture and design decisions for microservices- and event-driven platforms, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and aligned with enterprise standards.
  • Drive end-to-end technical ownership, from solution design through implementation, deployment, and operational support.
  • Partner closely with product managers, architects, business stakeholders, and senior leadership to translate business needs into sound technical solutions.
  • Mentor and coach engineers across multiple teams, providing guidance on design, coding practices, and career growth.
  • Establish and promote engineering best practices around code quality, testing, performance, security, and observability.
  • Identify and proactively address technical debt, architectural risks, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Present architectural concepts, tradeoffs, and technical strategies to senior and C level stakeholders, adapting communication style to the audience.
  • Contribute to and influence enterprise-wide technology strategies, reusable frameworks, and standards.
  • Champion a DevSecOps mindset, ensuring CI/CD, automation, and operational readiness are first-class concerns.
