The New York Times is looking for a full stack Software Engineer to join the NYT Cooking's Publishing team. NYT Cooking helps you discover and cook the world's best recipes. The NYT Cooking team is tight knit and interdisciplinary — we collaborate with our design, data, product, and editorial partners to develop new features for both our responsive website and mobile apps. We are made up of small, focused groups tasked with building great cooking experiences on a variety of devices and platforms, including web, iOS and Android. You will report to the Engineering Manager of Cooking's Publishing team.

  • Work on our editorial tooling, creating software that supports our editors and eventually Cooking's end users.
  • Collaborate with product, design, data, and editorial partners to improve the Cooking publishing platform.
  • Enable editors to develop their content more quickly and easily through tooling like a new Recipe Editor.
  • Build a technical vision based on evaluating existing technologies and partnering with other teams within the company.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence.
  • 2+ years experience building and maintaining modern web applications.
  • Experience with Typescript or Javascript and React/Next.js.
  • An understanding of internal tooling systems and how to support their users.
  • Experience troubleshooting systems using tools such as DataDog, Sentry or similar.
  • Some experience with GraphQL.
  • Some experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Familiarity with AWS, GCP or other cloud provider products and services.
  • Familiarity with Docker or similar containerization service.
  • Database experience, particularly using PostgreSQL.
