Software Engineer Intern – Medical Informatics (Summer 2026) Location: San Diego, CA (U.S.) Department: Medical Informatics – Software Engineering

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field.
  • Basic experience in software development, preferably in healthcare or life sciences.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Java, or C#.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
  • Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and data modeling.
  • Knowledge of software development best practices, including Agile methodologies and design patterns.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in cross- functional teams.
  • Ability to communicate results clearly and work effectively in a team setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to AI/ML applications.
  • Experience with version control tools, such as Git/GitHub.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or scientific publications in medical informatics.
  • Familiarity with data privacy and security standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, and clinical experts to develop and test software tools that support medical informatics initiatives.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and validation of software components and data pipelines.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and team meetings.
  • Document code, workflows, and technical decisions clearly and concisely.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes and tools.
