Grainger is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to help scale our Product Security team. You will solve real business problems with automation, self-service, and opinionated defaults that reduce risk without slowing delivery. Your work will focus on building guardrails, not gates so developers ship more secure code. You will also identify and drive opportunities that help teams adopt good security practices. You will work in a hybrid mode from Virtual or from our Lake Forest, IL or Chicago, IL offices. You will report to Manager of Product Security.

  • Incorporate security, resiliency, and quality into Product Security products and solutions to reduce risk without adding developer friction.
  • Design, build and evolve automated capabilities that are self-service, efficient, and dependable and can be leveraged company-wide across engineering teams.
  • Pick up new technologies, languages and frameworks quickly, apply them to your daily work, and share learnings to upskill the team.
  • Work independently on ambiguous problems, drive designs to decisions, and mentor other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical talks.
  • Continuously identify and reduce technical debt that increases risk or developer friction.
  • Collaborate with your Engineering Manager and tech lead to provide feedback on product roadmaps and backlog priorities.
  • Coordinate with Product Engineering to design solutions that automate security processes across the SDLC.
  • Suggest secure defaults and advise on clean coding practices, pipeline test coverage, and observability/alerting.
  • Participate in standups, desk checks, tech huddles, and story grooming meetings to provide guidance where it moves the work forward.
  • Record decisions, context, and outcomes related to design choices, and prepare Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 3 years of experience in software engineering, architecture, administration, observability in a large and distributed environment working across multiple teams.
  • Knowledge of cloud native event-driven microservices-based architectures, including operational concerns such as performance, resiliency, observability, monitoring, service discovery, and routing.
  • 3 years as a full stack engineer building and operating services in production, including modern web frontends with React or a similar framework.
  • 3 years coding in higher-level languages such as Python or Java in a multi-team codebase.
  • Experience implementing DevSecOps solutions that integrate smoothly into teams' development lifecycles, with measurable improvement to developer experience.
  • Experience deploying organization-wide secrets as a service and integrating with pipelines and runtime applications.
  • Working knowledge of containers and Kubernetes, APIs, and web services, including building services with FastAPI or similar frameworks.
  • Cloud experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure via UI, API, and CLI or automation.
  • Experience implementing infrastructure as code, such as Terraform and automation via API or CLI.
  • Experience with CI/CD principles and the ability to diagnose and improve pipeline issues.
  • Familiarity with common DevOps tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, or GitHub, and similar.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to mentor, influence, and collaborate across teams.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans with coverage starting on day one of employment and 6 free sessions each year with a licensed therapist to support your emotional wellbeing.
  • 18 paid time off (PTO) days annually for full-time employees (accrual prorated based on employment start date) and 6 company holidays per year.
  • 6% company contribution to a 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan each pay period, no employee contribution required.
  • Employee discounts, tuition reimbursement, student loan refinancing and free access to financial counseling, education, and tools.
  • Maternity support programs, nursing benefits, and up to 14 weeks paid leave for birth parents and up to 4 weeks paid leave for non-birth parents.
