The team's mission is to engineer and optimize the video codec pipeline for Pixel, from capture to consumption. The team delivers a positive video experience by achieving performance in three key areas: ultimate compression efficiency for smaller files and faster sharing, minimal power consumption for longer battery life, and flawless, low-latency playback of all modern formats. The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (C), or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • 2 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in computer science or related technical fields.
  • 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement low-level firmware modules in C to support advanced video codec features.
  • Optimize firmware code for low-power consumption and high-throughput performance on embedded processors. Collaborate with the software drivers team and vendor to define and implement APIs/IOCTLs for seamless firmware-to-software communication.
  • Assist in troubleshooting video pipeline issues, from the driver layer down to the hardware registers. Manage the technical relationship with external video IP vendor, including tracking bug reports and reviewing IP documentation.
  • Evaluate vendor-provided reference code. Develop comprehensive test benches and unit tests to validate firmware and qualify firmware releases.
  • Own the firmware release process, including versioning, changelog documentation, and binary packaging. Maintain firmware branches, providing critical bug fixes for existing products.
