WHY BOX NEEDS YOU Box’s Edge team powers the connectivity behind our products, including Box Zones and applications hosted across our environment. We’re evolving from a ticket-driven support model to building automated, self-serve network capabilities that application and service owners can consume reliably at scale. We’re looking for a Software Engineer III to design and build backend services and automation that turn complex network functionality into simple, safe, and repeatable workflows. In this role, you’ll deliver high-impact systems using Python and Terraform, grounded in strong networking fundamentals. You’ll partner with internal customers to transform recurring requests into robust products, improving delivery speed, reliability, and developer experience across Box.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
  • Proficient in Python with a track record of building production-grade services or automation.
  • Hands-on with Infrastructure as Code, especially Terraform, including module design, reviews, and CI/CD integration.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (e.g., TCP/IP, routing vs. switching concepts, DNS, load balancing, security groups/firewalls).
  • Product mindset: you distill complex systems into safe, reusable abstractions and prioritize user experience for internal customers.
  • Systems thinker who can break down ambiguous problems, propose pragmatic designs, and measure outcomes.
  • Collaborative communicator who seeks diverse perspectives, builds alignment, and gives and receives feedback constructively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cloud platforms (GCP and/or AWS), service-to-service networking, and network automation tooling.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms (e.g., Infroscope or similar), testing frameworks, and secure-by-default practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement backend services and tooling in Python that make network capabilities accessible for internal application and service owners.
  • Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code with Terraform to provision, configure, and manage network resources reliably.
  • Translate partner needs into automated workflows that replace manual, ticket-based processes and scale across teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, question assumptions thoughtfully, and contribute to decisions that improve reliability, security, and usability.
  • Integrate observability and guardrails to support safe, auditable, and measurable network changes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (application owners, reliability, platform) to define requirements and deliver end-to-end solutions.
  • Write tests, documentation, and runbooks to support operational excellence and maintainability.
  • Contribute to roadmap planning and continuous improvement of network automation patterns and standards.
  • Participate in our on-call rotation, remaining available during your on-call window to help respond to and triage issues.
