About The Position

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. In this role, you will join the Top-of-Rack (ToR) Infrastructure team to connect servers driving Google's global services, Cloud, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) platforms to the network. You will manage Top-of-Rack switch infrastructure and life-cycle engineering, acting as the nexus between compute and the network fabric. The TILES (Tor Infrastructure Life-cycle Engineering and Scheduling) team delivers scalable, on-time server-to-fabric connectivity, robust capacity management and cross fabric network aware scheduling and addressing challenges across key pillars: Model server and rack network components and manage life-cycle engineering. Design and model ToR to fabric connections and uplink topology, optimize network bandwidth utilization, and create bandwidth policies for Google services and customers. You will ensure ToR availability, health, and operations, and manage network-aware scheduling to schedule jobs in real-time. The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree in an industry setting (C++).

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
  • Experience with software development in C++, C, Go, or Java.
  • Experience with networking or distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software services that orchestrate the network for Google's next-generation hardware and AI/ML platforms.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of scalable network models for machines, racks, and ToR-to-fabric topologies using technologies like UNM and Model X.
  • Build automation to streamline network capacity provisioning and enhance resource efficiency across Google's datacenters.
  • Enhance the reliability and operational excellence of the ToR infrastructure, ensuring seamless network performance for all Google services.
  • Partner with teams across cloud to deliver end-to-end networking solutions for NPIs enabling AI/ML infrastrtcure. Drive or contribute significantly to projects focused on introducing new rack switch hardware, improving the flexibility, efficiency, speed, and reliability of deployments, and boosting network availability.
