Software Engineer II

WalmartSunnyvale, CA
$104,000 - $202,000

About The Position

Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization. What you'll do... We are looking for a talented and motivated Software Engineer II to join our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain internal tooling that empowers engineering teams to quickly triage, diagnose, and resolve production incidents. You will be at the intersection of software engineering and operations, ensuring our systems are highly observable, resilient, and easy to troubleshoot at scale.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of software engineering experience, with at least 1 year in an SRE, platform, or infrastructure-focused role
  • Proficiency in one or more languages: Go, Python, Java, or TypeScript/Node.js
  • Hands-on experience building and consuming REST APIs and CLI tools
  • Familiarity with observability concepts: metrics, logs, traces (the three pillars)
  • Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, or Azure) and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with Python ML/data libraries: scikit-learn, pandas, numpy, or similar
  • Understanding of LLM concepts — prompt engineering, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), embeddings, and vector search
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across distributed systems
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps workflows
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area.
  • Option 2: 3 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • We value candidates with a background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
  • The ideal candidate would have knowledge of accessibility best practices and join us as we continue to create accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for supporting an inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop internal tools and dashboards that accelerate incident triage and root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Build automation to reduce mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to resolve (MTTR) for production issues
  • Integrate with observability platforms (e.g., Grafana, Datadog, Splunk, Prometheus) to surface actionable insights during incidents
  • Develop CLI tools, runbooks-as-code, and self-service portals that reduce toil for on-call engineers
  • Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, and application teams to understand pain points and deliver targeted tooling solutions
  • Contribute to incident response workflows, including automated alerting, escalation, and post-mortem tooling
  • Write clean, tested, and well-documented code following team standards and best practices
  • Participate in on-call rotations to gain firsthand understanding of operational challenges
  • Champion SRE principles — reliability, scalability, and operational excellence — within engineering teams
