What’s the role? Etsy’s Core Infrastructure Engineering team is seeking a Platform Engineer to help us build the next generation of developer experience at Etsy. The Core Infra team owns and operates business‑critical platform capabilities—such as networking, CDNs, and infrastructure‑as‑code tooling platforms - that provide paved paths for developers to reliably build, test, and deploy code, while supporting the uptime and reliability of etsy.com. As a Platform Engineer at Etsy, you’ll treat internal engineers as your customers: partnering closely with teams to understand their needs, evolving the platforms and self‑service tooling they depend on, and owning a variety of systems to ensure they are reliable, scalable, and delightful to use. This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager. Requirements

  • You are an experienced software engineer, with at least 2 years experience in systems/infrastructure engineering or Platform or DevOps roles, preferably in a cloud environment
  • You have a solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS) and hands-on experience with cloud networking (VPCs, subnets, routing, firewalls/security groups, DNS, and traffic flow), including working with load balancers, CDNs, and VPNs.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure As Code tooling like Terraform and configuration management tooling like Chef/Ansible is essential
  • Ability to monitor system performance, analyze system logs, and perform tuning to ensure efficient operations on Linux platforms
  • Hands on debugging experience with Linux based operating systems
  • Proficiency with one or more programming languages (PHP, Python, Go, Ruby or other equivalent languages)
  • Experience with cloud architectures (GCP, AWS), working with VM based architectures.
  • Empathy, communication, and technical skills are valued equally
  • You take the lead in directing and implementing solutions to significantly complex, unscoped problems
  • Have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write
  • You understand that being an effective software engineer is as much about communicating with people as it is about writing code

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement highly scalable and maintainable systems by contributing at multiple levels of our infrastructure stack using technologies like Chef, Terraform, Python, Prometheus and more
  • Support the day-to-day operations of running a large scale application, including monitoring, measuring, and troubleshooting infrastructure and services
  • Automate the upgrade procedures that range from Operating System upgrades to core application upgrades
  • Manage multiple aspects of Etsy’s core infrastructure, supporting millions of requests to etsy.com daily
  • Continually automate away toil that can be burdensome for teams
  • Develop automation and processes to enable teams to deploy, manage, configure, scale, and monitor their applications.
  • Identify and implement application reliability and availability improvements
  • Automating continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) pipelines, as well as supporting the underlying infrastructure.
