About The Position

The Catalog Algo Engineering team at Wayfair accelerates growth by solving core challenges in product data quality and catalog intelligence at scale. We build capabilities that power the customer browsing experience (such as visual search and personalized recommendations), including filter-driving product tagging, dimension accuracy checks, AI-generated review summaries, and product image classification. We also streamline supplier onboarding through automated validation and agentic GenAI workflows. Leveraging Generative AI, multi-modal models, and intelligent data pipelines, we transform merchandising strategy into accurate, consistent, and enriched product data-reducing manual effort and elevating the end-to-end shopping journey. We are looking for a strong Software Engineer with a solid technical foundation, curiosity for ML/GenAI, and a proactive, execution-first mindset. In this role, you will work closely with machine learning scientists and ML engineers to design, build, and scale the systems that bring advanced models into production. You will help transform cutting-edge research-spanning deep learning, vision-language models, and Generative AI agentic workflows-into reliable, high-performance services that operate at massive scale. You will contribute across the stack by building data pipelines, model services, orchestration workflows, and cloud-native infrastructure that support millions of products and requests. If you're passionate about collaborating with scientists, building scalable ML/GenAI systems, and delivering real-world business impact through engineering excellence, this role is a perfect fit.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering or data engineering roles.
  • Strong Python skills for data processing or backend development (Pandas, PySpark, etc.).
  • Advanced SQL skills and practical experience with cloud data warehouses such as BigQuery.
  • Hands-on experience building scalable systems on GCP (BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, GCS, Dataproc, Vertex AI)
  • Experience with big data technologies (Spark, Hadoop, MapReduce) and messaging systems (Kafka, Pub/Sub).
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes).
  • Exposure to ML infrastructure or deploying ML/GenAI models into production environments.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs across technologies, design patterns, and system architectures.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using modern IDEs and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, event-driven, and batch data pipelines using Python, Golang, SQL, BigQuery and big data technologies (Spark, Dataflow, etc.).
  • Partner closely with data scientists and ML engineers to build, deploy, and evolve services encapsulating ML & GenAI models at scale.
  • Implement efficient data and algorithm pipelines to process millions of products and requests.
  • Architect, build, and manage robust data models and infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and GKE.
  • Build and manage the CI/CD, orchestration (Kubernetes, Airflow/Composer), and infrastructure that power ML systems.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to understand requirements and deliver scalable solutions.
  • Promote best practices around data quality, reliability, and performance for large-scale datasets.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, documentation, and code quality across the team.
