We are looking for an entry-level Software Engineer (SWE I) to join the OpenEdge Core Platform team at Progress Software. This role is an excellent opportunity for a motivated early-career engineer to learn how a large-scale, mission-critical enterprise platform is built, maintained, and modernized.
As an SWE I, you will work closely with senior and principal engineers, product managers, and architects to contribute to the evolution of the OpenEdge core language, runtime, and supporting platform components. You will gain hands-on experience with systems-level development, legacy code modernization, quality and security practices, and modern development tooling—all while being supported by structured mentoring and leverage AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity and code quality.

Base Salary Range: $72,250 - $89,250
This position is also eligible to participate in our performance-based annual corporate bonus plan. Final base compensation is determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, education, demonstrable experience, and allowance for future and continued salary growth. Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
• Strong foundation in programming fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, OOP)
• Experience with at least one systems or backend language (e.g., C, C++, Java, C#, or similar)
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar)
• Familiarity with Git or other version control systems
• Ability to learn new languages, tools, and frameworks quickly
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Clear written and verbal communication skills

Nice To Haves

• Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in backend or systems software
• Exposure to compiler concepts, runtimes, databases, or operating systems
• Experience writing automated tests
• Familiarity with Linux/Unix development environments
• Interest in enterprise platforms, developer tooling, or language/runtime design

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and maintenance of OpenEdge core language and platform components
• Implement well-scoped features, enhancements, and bug fixes under the guidance of senior engineers
• Learn and apply best practices for code quality, testing, and secure development
• Participate in code reviews, incorporating feedback to improve design and implementation skills
• Assist with refactoring and modernization of existing codebases to improve maintainability and performance
• Write and maintain unit tests and functional tests
• Collaborate with product management and QA to understand requirements and expected behavior
• Participate in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives
• Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot or equivalent) to support coding, debugging, and testing activities
• Apply sound engineering judgment to validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and performance
• Follow team guidelines for responsible and effective use of AI in software development workflow
