About The Position

EarthAI is a frontier initiative at Google Research to build the world’s most advanced planetary foundation models and bring it together with Gemini based reasoning to understand, plan, and act to help address some of the most critical challenges of our time. Our team develops models that interpret the world's physical dynamics, from global mobility and population shifts to environmental signals — transforming the entire planet into an interactive environment for understanding and reasoning. As an AI/ML Software Engineer, you will design and deploy multimodal generative AI and agentic systems at a massive scale. Google Research is building the next generation of intelligent systems for all Google products. To achieve this, we’re working on projects that utilize the latest computer science techniques developed by skilled software developers and research scientists. Google Research teams collaborate closely with other teams across Google, maintaining the flexibility and versatility required to adapt new projects and foci that meet the demands of the world's fast-paced business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 2 years of experience with software development in Python and C++.
• 2 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
• 1 year of experience with GenAI techniques (e.g., large language models, multi-modal, large vision models) or with GenAI-related concepts (language modeling, computer vision).

Nice To Haves

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Experience in large-scale training of multimodal generative models.
• Experience in building multiagent systems.
• Understanding of large language models (LLMs) and their application to agentic systems.
• Ability to lead a research project from conception to a successful outcome.

Responsibilities

• Design and scale models for planet-scale datasets, including satellite streams, population understanding and global environmental signals.
• Adapt Gemini models for complex "planetary-aware" reasoning, enabling advanced task planning and multi-step execution in complex contexts.
• Participate in design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies.
• Advance the field through original model development and benchmarking, ensuring new breakthroughs are performant and reproducible.
• Collaborate to scale models globally, turning transformative AI research into reliable products that have a transformative impact on billions of lives.
