About The Position

At Personalis, we are transforming the active management of cancer through breakthrough personalized testing. We aim to drive a new paradigm for cancer management, guiding care from biopsy through the life of the patient. Our highly sensitive assays combine tumor-and-normal profiling with proprietary algorithms to deliver advanced insights even as cancer evolves over time. Our products are designed to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) and recurrence at the earliest timepoints, enable selection of targeted therapies based on ultra-comprehensive genomic profiling, and enhance biomarker strategy for drug development. Personalis is based in Fremont, California. Summary: We are seeking a Software Engineer I to support the development and ongoing support of our Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). This role will contribute to both enhancements of existing systems and the development of modern, cloud-based platforms hosted in AWS. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to build reliable, scalable solutions that support laboratory operations in a regulated environment. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to gain hands-on experience with production systems while growing skills in modern technologies. Onsite: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 1–2 years of software development experience (internships and academic projects welcome).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python or Java.
  • Understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming).
  • Familiarity with relational databases and REST APIs.
  • Experience using Git or similar version control systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or strong interest in healthcare, life sciences, or regulated systems.
  • Exposure to AWS or other cloud platforms.
  • Familiarity with Linux environments or containerization.
  • Exposure to graph databases or interest in learning graph-based data modeling.
  • Interest in healthcare, life sciences, or regulated systems.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of software systems supporting laboratory operations.
  • Develop backend services and APIs using Python and/or Java.
  • Work with relational databases and gain exposure to graph database technologies.
  • Support cloud-based services and deployments in AWS.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and technical documentation.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues across development and production environments.
  • Participate in structured production support activities, including issue investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
