The Software Development Manager in this position will lead a team focused on designing, developing and launching innovative ad experiences delivered to shoppers and brands. The team utilizes leading-edge technologies in generative AI to help shoppers discover products and brands. These solutions also empower advertisers to reach shoppers, using their own voice to explain how their products meet shoppers' needs. The ideal candidate for this role has strong experience in designing and developing scalable high-performance systems and services that are flexible, reliable, and maintainable. You have excellent problem-solving skills, a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, and a customer-focused mindset. You take pragmatic and iterative approach to building software: you have an ability to simplify and get things done with a demonstrated track record of building and delivering software and working effectively with external and internal teams. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Directly manage and lead a cross-functional team of Applied Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and Software Development Engineers.
  • Design, develop, and operate large-scale distributed systems.
  • Apply Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to deliver more relevant, personalized advertiser and shopper experiences.
  • Collaborate with applied scientists, product managers, and engineers to define and deliver customer-focused solutions.
  • Write high-quality, maintainable code and participate in design and code reviews.
  • Drive operational excellence through monitoring, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • Internal applications should have existing relevant experience in advertising technology to facilitate a quick start. We are not, at this time, considering candidates without this background.
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
  • Experience using managed ML/AI solutions
  • Experience with generative model architectures.
  • Deep understanding of large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering.
  • Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
