Software Development Engineer III – Medical Management As a Software Development Engineer III on the Medical Management team, you will work with a small, collaborative group of engineers who value partnership and shared ownership in delivering high‑quality solutions. The team supports a broad set of Medical Management capabilities on behalf of our members, leveraging technology to create seamless, reliable experiences across Premera’s medical services. In this role, you will independently design and develop solutions while contributing to team‑driven initiatives that improve reliability, efficiency, and member and provider outcomes across Medical Management domains. This is a hybrid role, located on our campus in Mountlake Terrace, Washington.

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree plus five (5) years of relevant professional experience (required).
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycles with hands‑on experience using one or more modern programming languages.
  • Highly proficient in designing and developing systems and applications to solve business problems across a variety of scenarios, with a proven track record of delivering and deploying technology solutions.
  • Demonstrates high‑quality application development through effective use of coding standards, development tools, and best practices; able to adapt quickly to new technologies.
  • Able to represent the team effectively when collaborating with other teams or leaders, clearly communicating technical perspectives and tradeoffs.
  • Committed to continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Capable of stepping into a technical leadership role when needed, particularly in solution design, development, and deployment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Exhibits strong problem‑solving skills, sound judgment, and effective decision‑making.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing and building service‑based or API‑driven solutions.
  • Exposure to cloud‑based platforms and modern application architectures.
  • Experience working in healthcare or other highly regulated environments (recommended, not required).
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment (recommended, not required).
  • Experience with automated testing tools and practices.
  • Ability to independently design, implement, and deliver technology solutions end‑to‑end.
  • Familiarity with healthcare platforms or core administration systems (such as Facets) is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience leveraging AI‑assisted development tools and the ability to identify opportunities where AI‑based solutions can be applied to improve system efficiency, reliability, and engineering workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Translate system and business requirements into high‑quality code using appropriate programming languages and tools, applying CI/CD (Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment) practices.
  • Support multiple Medical Management capabilities, including (but not limited to) Prior Authorization, Utilization Management, Care Management, provider and member workflows, and related clinical and operational services.
  • Design and enhance digital services and integrations that support Medical Management processes and data exchange.
  • Provide production support for applications used by Customer Service Representatives, clinical teams, and provider network partners.
  • Support vendor relationships and third‑party services as needed.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, product partners, and IT leaders to identify problems and deliver effective, technology‑based solutions.
  • Perform unit testing and automated testing; document test results and outcomes.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and SDLC artifacts, including production change notifications and issue resolutions.
  • Analyze and resolve small to low‑risk production issues related to assigned applications, including troubleshooting, debugging, performance tuning, on‑call rotation, and root cause analysis.
  • Develop and execute a personal training plan to continuously build skills and deepen understanding of Premera’s business strategies and healthcare domain.
