As a Software Development Engineer (AI) Intern, you will collaborate with talented engineers, design and build scalable systems, and explore technologies that keep the digital world safe. Whether your passion is backend development, DevOps, or learning new tools, you’ll take on meaningful challenges, sharpen your skills, and make your mark at F5. Eligibility: This internship is open to students pursuing their bachelor’s or master’s degree at an accredited college or university in the US, planning to graduate between December 2026 and June 2027. Our interns (and their potential subsequent full-time role) are required to be based in one of our US hub locations where you can experience a hybrid working environment. Interns will be based in Seattle, WA or San Jose, CA based on team placement. This role will be Seattle, WA based and interns are expected to relocate if not currently in one of those areas. The ideal candidate will be able to: Contribute to real-world projects and the development cycle of products that meet team goals. Work with peers to design, implement, and test code in a collaborative environment. Help analyze requirements, test features, and integrate components into applications. Assist with creating technical documentation for designs and new features. Participate in design and code reviews to learn best practices and ensure quality. Collaborate with your project team to explore and develop data-driven solutions. Requirements

  • In the process of completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related fields.
  • Must have at least one additional quarter/semester of school remaining following the completion of the internship.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States.
  • Demonstrated programming experience in Python (preferred) or Java/C++/Go, including building APIs/services, writing tests (pytest/JUnit), and using Git in a collaborative codebase.
  • Hands-on exposure to machine learning and deep learning concepts and tooling, such as PyTorch (preferred) or TensorFlow/JAX, including training/inference workflows and basic model evaluation.
  • Familiarity with modern LLM tooling and patterns, such as Hugging Face Transformers, prompt engineering, and retrieval-augmented generation concepts (embeddings + search).
  • Exposure to data handling for ML, including common formats and pipelines (e.g., Parquet, basic ETL, and data quality checks).
  • Demonstrated knowledge in computer science fundamentals (e.g., data structures and algorithms).
  • Must be willing to relocate to Seatle, WA for the internship and for a subsequent full-time role upon graduation, if offered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with API development (e.g., FastAPI/Flask, REST/gRPC) and backend fundamentals (auth, pagination, error handling).
  • Experience implementing retrieval-driven AI applications using LangChain/LlamaIndex and vector search technologies (e.g., pgvector, Pinecone, Milvus, Weaviate).
  • Familiarity with fine-tuning approaches (e.g., LoRA/PEFT) and/or ML experimentation tools (MLflow or Weights & Biases).
  • Exposure to containers and modern DevOps: Docker, Kubernetes basics, CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
  • Observability basics: logging/metrics/tracing (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana concepts).
  • Bonus for distributed/data tooling used in ML workloads: Spark, Ray, Kafka, or Airflow.
