About The Position

Do you want to be a part of one of Amazon's largest big data processing teams? Computing AWS bills, at its core, is a large-scale distributed systems problem that requires processing trillions of usage records every hour for millions of customers, with a 100% accuracy promise. As a Software Development Manager in AWS Metering, you have the opportunity to engage with all of AWS, learn their needs and serve them with the systems and services your team delivers. AWS Metering is on the critical path of billing and you can expect your work to be used by hundreds of AWS teams, impact millions of external customers, or save millions of dollars in cost. We build the services and features that enable all usage based billing for AWS. We also build one of the largest big-data processing pipelines in Amazon and continuously improve its scale and efficiency. In addition to these, we are building new anomaly detection systems to minimize billing errors. A day in the life We allow flexible management styles, but in general, you can expect to meet with you team regularly to discuss progress, blockers, and operations. You will meet with your direct reports to discuss their careers, and eventually write their promo docs. You will meet with Product Managers, customers, finance, and Leadership to understand the business, learn about customer needs, etc. Occasionally, you also meet with Leadership to present your results and success stories.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Product and service teams to understand customer needs.
  • Create a vision, goals, and execution plans and work closely with Program Managers towards your goals.
  • Lead a team of 9+ engineers to deliver results, while growing them and growing the size of your team.
  • Work closely with Finance team to improve efficiency of the services you own.
  • Build an expertise in billing, identify new problems to solve and new technologies to develop and eventually grow your business.
  • Improve your teams process, operations, and productivity.
  • Present your team's work and results in front of Leadership and the full organization.
