Are you passionate about building the systems that help engineers understand what's really happening inside mobile apps used by hundreds of millions of customers? The team is building the next generation of mobile observability at Amazon, starting with the Amazon Shopping app and extending across Amazon's mobile portfolio. This role involves working at the intersection of mobile engineering and distributed systems, designing and building crash reporting, performance monitoring, tracing, and telemetry infrastructure to provide app builders with deep, real-time visibility into system health and behavior. A typical day involves designing and building observability infrastructure for one of the world's most-downloaded shopping apps. This could include integrating and extending a next-generation mobile observability platform for capabilities like session replay, remote workflows, and real-time alerting, or evolving OpenTelemetry-based tracing infrastructure for end-to-end visibility from mobile client to backend services. The role also involves designing modular observability components (metrics, error reporting, logging) for all Amazon mobile apps, building systems to measure and alert on app stability, crash rates, ANRs, and feature health across Android and iOS. It includes evaluating and integrating observability providers, defining criteria, running proof-of-concepts, and building abstraction layers. The work spans Android (Kotlin/Java) and iOS (Swift/Objective-C) codebases, building client-side SDKs and wrappers. Collaboration with performance, stability, and partner teams is key to defining metrics, setting SLAs, and reducing crash rates. Projects are owned end-to-end, from design to production rollout, directly impacting the reliability and performance for hundreds of millions of Amazon customers. The Mobile Observability team builds and operates components, services, tools, and APIs for deep visibility into system health and behavior, creating the foundation for metrics and telemetry across the Amazon Shopping app. It's a small, high-impact team within Mobile Shopping Foundation, focusing on crash reporting, session replay, error reporting, distributed tracing, and stability metrics across Android and iOS. The team is undergoing a major platform evolution, migrating to a next-generation observability platform, building modular components, and defining mobile observability across all Amazon mobile apps.
