The Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Beamline of National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) provides world-class capabilities for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS), offering ultra-high energy resolution in the soft X-ray range (200 eV – 2000 eV), full momentum-control and novel opportunities for the sample-environment. The main goal of the SIX Beamline, which has been open to users since 2019, is to investigate the complex physics of quantum materials. The SIX Beamline Team focuses on the study of magnetic and electronic excitations in novel materials and unconventional superconductors, devices under-operation, laser-pumped metastable states. POSITION DESCRIPTION The selected candidate will be part of the group of Dr. Valentina Bisogni, focusing on the electronic investigation of novel van der Waals (vdW) materials and two-dimensional (2D) Moiré materials and devices, etc... The candidate will primarily use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering for these studies, taking advantage of the state-of-the-art RIXS Beamline at NSLSII: the SIX 02-ID Beamline. The candidate will also have the opportunity to use various facilities available at BNL (e.g. CFN) for sample preparation and characterization. Additionally, as a member of the Electronic Structure Techniques (EST) group, the candidate is welcome to collaborate with other members of the group as well as to utilize complementary research opportunities at other beamlines.
