The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) is seeking a part-time social worker licensed in New York to assist with the Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project (FedPro-SDNY) operating in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. This innovative initiative provides free, limited-scope legal assistance to self-represented individuals, including those who are incarcerated, who are litigating civil cases primarily in areas such as civil rights, employment discrimination, Fair Labor Standards Act, and Social Security benefits. The social worker will work closely with the legal team to provide trauma-informed support to self-represented litigants, ensuring that they have access to the necessary resources and services to navigate their legal challenges. The role involves delivering holistic and trauma-informed legal services, helping clients access human and social services through appropriate referrals, and developing service plans as needed. The social worker will also advocate on behalf of clients for public entitlements and facilitate linkages to care and services. Additionally, the position includes providing short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and safety assessments for clients in immediate need of support. The social worker will assist with client intake, case management, and may provide expert witness testimony when necessary. Training legal team staff and volunteers on best practices for addressing mental health needs and trauma is also a key responsibility. The CBJC is committed to expanding access to justice by providing high-quality, free civil legal services to over 25,000 New Yorkers each year who lack the resources to hire private counsel. The social worker will collaborate with various stakeholders, including law firms, corporate legal departments, and law schools, to enhance the support provided to clients. This position is part-time, requiring 10-20 hours of work per week, and offers a flexible hybrid work environment, primarily based in Lower Manhattan with some remote work.
