The position reports to the Admissions Manager and utilizes clinical expertise to perform assessments of patients potentially requiring mental health services. The role involves performing initial assessments, coordinating patient care, and ensuring effective implementation of patients' plans of care. The individual will also participate in continuous quality improvement and register patients to obtain necessary demographic and insurance information.

  • Perform psychiatric assessments.
  • Obtain initial authorization if applicable.
  • Consult with physicians and other health care providers to assure effective implementation of patients' plans of care.
  • Communicate treatment recommendations made by the doctor, including coordination of community services, follow-up care, and education.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of the medical record.
  • Report patient outcome information to the manager.
  • Assist with Social Work services on the inpatient units as needed.
  • Compile and analyze data to generate reports that accurately represent utilization trends and patterns.
  • Interview patients/obtain collateral information via telephone for pre-admission or admission.
  • Obtain identification, demographic, physician, and insurance information from patients and accurately enter this information into the Hospital financial system.
  • Update the system after validation of the new patient's financial information.
  • Pre-certify with the patient's insurance carrier to ensure maximum coverage.
  • Request copies of the insurance card(s) and driver's license or other government picture ID.
  • Provide the Medicare letter for Medicare patients and complete the Medicare Secondary Payor Questionnaire (MSP) and Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN).
  • Refer the patient to the Patient Account Liaison (PAL) if they are unable to secure satisfactory payment arrangements.
  • Verify insurance coverage by calling the insurance company or using online eligibility systems.
  • Obtain pre-certification information from the insurance company's pre-certification unit.
  • Notify the assigned Unit of the patient's arrival and prepare the patient's chart, ID band, and labels.
  • Arrange for an escort to assist the patient to the assigned unit.
  • Complete other job-related assignments and projects as directed.
  • Master's degree in social work or the counseling field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience conducting psychiatric assessments preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of procedures and techniques required to treat targeted patient population.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and organize work activities and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to identify and utilize appropriate resources.
  • Computer literacy and ability to use various computer programs.
  • Attends and participates in department meetings.
  • Completes mandatory education and annual competencies.
  • Maintains license/certification in good standing.
  • Available to work overtime and additional shifts when required.
