About The Position

In compliance with Article 9 of the agreement between the PFT and the District, only probationary and tenured faculty are invited to apply to the following full-time, tenure-track faculty vacancies. This listing is being posted for ten (10) working days. If interested, you must submit ALL required application materials by midnight on the stated deadline The Social Work and Human Services ( HUSV ) program mission is to provide a comprehensive curriculum for paraprofessionals in social work and human services. It is designed to help California meet the statewide challenges and the rapidly expanding need for health, public, and human service/social worker paraprofessionals. Students’ training will allow them to become well-rounded employees who are able to participate as team members in health and human service agencies and social work settings. The program is also designed to align with various transfer programs for students who wish to continue to an Associate Degree for Transfer in Social Work or Associate of Arts Degree in Social Sciences. Under general supervision of the Vice President of Instruction, the Social Work and Human Services instructor teaches community college courses in social work, human services, and related areas.

Requirements

  • Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in health science, health education, biology, nursing, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, dietetics, nutrition or public health or bachelor’s degree in any of these and a master’s in any biological science.
  • Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology or a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in counseling, sociology, statistics, health science, neuroscience or social work
  • The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable as college transcripts, as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications).
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Social Work.
  • At least five (5) years of work experience in Social Work or Human Services-related careers.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a full range of courses in social work and human services .
  • Experience in developing programs and curriculum, particularly related to career education and including both credit and non-credit program pathways.
  • Experience coordinating and supervising student internships and field placements.
  • Experience working with advisory boards and community and industry partners and an ability to initiate and maintain contact with the professional community as needed by the program.
  • Experience with the certification standards of social work and human services related agencies.
  • Evidence of strong commitment to professional growth and development and to the continued innovation and improvement of teaching.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current teaching practices, including assessment of learning outcomes and equity-minded pedagogy.
  • Evidence of effective use of technology, including online learning management systems
  • Commitment to cross-disciplinary education and collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities.
  • Awareness of the role and purpose of community college generally and Berkeley City College’s mission, vision, and values specifically.
  • Ability to explain discipline-specific concepts in a clear, logical and concise fashion; interact effectively with students, peers and administrative personnel; work independently to solve problems; motivate students towards their academic and professional goals; be patient with students; maintain integrity, honesty, reliability, and cooperation.
  • Excellent and effective communication skills, both oral and written.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment.
  • Instructors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced teaching methods, including the use of current and future technologies to support student learning and career objectives.
