About The Position

Bishop McNamara High School is a private, Catholic co-educational high school in the Holy Cross tradition, offering its students a challenging college preparatory curriculum and a complete range of athletics and activities. The school is located in Forestville, Maryland, about 10 minutes from Washington, D.C. Bishop McNamara High School has an opening to join our Social Studies department. This is a full-time teaching position, and you will be supported by a collaborative and experienced team of educators. JOB SUMMARY: We teach thought process, intellectual attitudes, and analytic methods that shape the way students look at the past, the present and the future. We aim for our students to understand the significance of the past; to develop historical empathy; to understand historical causation and the role of the individual and of change in history; and to realize that the world and the United States are both made up of many diverse cultures, yet in the case of the world, there is a shared humanity, and in the case of the United States, a shared culture and common experience. Salary commensurate with experience.

Requirements

  • Experience teaching in a high school, with demonstrated expertise in differentiated instruction.
  • Experience using technology to extend and enhance learning in a 1:1 BYOD environment.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in history, political science, anthropology, international affairs, American studies, psychology, or secondary education
  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

Responsibilities

  • Commitment to development of the whole student, including well-being and character, in alignment with the Holy Cross tradition of education.
  • Prepare lesson materials, grade papers, manage the classroom, and evaluate and give feedback to students.
  • Exercise open and respectful communication with families, co-workers, supervisors, and other school staff.
  • Measure progress and accomplishments of students towards their academic achievements on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Create and keep records on attendance, accidents, incidents, and other noteworthy events in accordance with licensing guidelines and program policies.
  • Attend conferences and workshops in order to further advance professional development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with outlined guidelines.
  • Provide a safe, thriving, and respectful environment for all students in the classroom and on the school campus.
