About The Position

West Michigan Aviation Academy is seeking a full-time Social Studies Teacher for the upcoming 2026/2027 school year. WMAA is an innovative, academically rigorous charter high school focused on hands-on aviation and STEM education. Through its mission, vision, and values, WMAA provides a unique educational opportunity for students to focus on high-growth employment fields during their high school education. The school places intense emphasis on real-life, hands-on projects that incorporate multidisciplinary learning, design thinking, and business-level skill sets. Students enjoy opportunities for business internships, mentorships, and job shadows. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of social studies concepts, a passion for teaching, and the ability to engage students in meaningful discussions about history, geography, economics, and social issues. The Social Studies Teacher will create an inclusive classroom environment that encourages curiosity, respect, and a genuine interest in the social sciences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Studies Education, History, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Valid teaching certification/license in Michigan for secondary education with an endorsement in the subject.
  • Strong knowledge of social studies curriculum, educational best practices, and assessment methods.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in planning and assessing educational activities.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Encourage critical thinking and discussions around social studies topics, including but not limited to history, culture, citizenship, and global issues.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive lesson plans that meet the curriculum standards and cater to diverse learning styles.
  • Develop assessments and monitor student performance through various methods, including tests, quizzes, projects, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to align curricula and participate in ongoing professional development initiatives.
  • Participate in school activities, meetings, and events to contribute to the overall mission of the institution.
  • Maintain a safe and positive environment for all students.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Supervision of multiple students at once.
  • Establishing routines and procedures.
  • Maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
  • Create and implement instructional plans.
  • Participate in continuous professional development.
