About The Position

The Social Service Advocate is part of New Hampshire Public Defender’s legal defense team working with assigned clients through social service interventions at all stages of the court process. The SSA works under the direction of the assigned NHPD attorney but may also provide additional insight into cases. All services provided by the SSA are directly related to obtaining the best legal outcome for clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology, counseling, or relevant field is required.
  • Prior experience working directly with clients is highly desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional relations with clients, program employees, and outside stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Discretion to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
  • Attention to detail in composing and proofing materials, with ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and standard office equipment (fax, copier, scanner, etc.)
  • Physical requirements include retrieving and distributing files, written documents, or office supplies weighing up to 30 pounds; retrieving and replacing objects from shelves up to eight feet high; sitting and keyboarding for extended periods of time. Occasional travel throughout the state of New Hampshire may be required. An unexpired, valid driver’s license and a reliable, insured automobile are required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare written output for the court and/or attorney, including dispositional treatment plans and alternative treatment sentencing.
  • Document and corroborate a client’s personal history through collecting and analyzing all relevant life history records.
  • Interview client’s family members and other personal and collateral contacts.
  • Testify in court when necessary and beneficial.
  • Identify programs and services that may benefit clients, establish connections, and make referrals.
  • Coordinate with state agencies and community-based service organizations to advocate for clients’ needs and wishes.
  • Intercede during a crisis on client’s behalf by connecting them to immediate and necessary resources.
  • Organize in/outpatient treatment for incarcerated individuals.
  • Assist in completion of applications for community resources.
  • Develop relationships with providers to increase positive outcomes for clients.
  • Participate in related community meetings to advocate for change and greater collaboration for the benefit of clients.
  • Maintain a working relationship with local corrections facilities and courts.
  • Assess immediate client needs and opportunity for intervention in crisis situations.
  • Recommend the use of experts for clients who require further evaluation.
  • Conduct alternative treatment investigation and/or social history investigation.
  • Complete baseline assessments (competency, mental health status, etc.) to determine appropriateness for a referral to an expert or provide information for attorney use.
