This position is assigned to the N.C. Birth Defects Monitoring Program (BDMP), a branch within the State Center for Health Statistics. The BDMP is a statewide public health surveillance system that collects, tracks, analyzes, and disseminates data on infants born with congenital malformations in N.C. This individual will conduct systematic reviews of medical records to interpret the medical diagnoses and descriptions and abstract the relevant statistical and medical information on the infant and mother into an electronic database. This position is required to read and interpret highly complex medical information from a variety of sources and interpret/assign appropriate codes for each diagnosis (using ICD9CM, ICD10CM, and the 6-digit British Pediatric Association scheme). This position serves as the primary liaison between the BDMP and hospitals in order to facilitate data collection activities. The employee will be expected to travel to assigned hospitals for data collection purposes as needed. The employee must be able to work independently and perform job requirements with minimal supervision. Please note that while this is a fully remote position, there will be occasional instances where travel to the DHHS Headquarters in Raleigh for meetings is required.
