About The Position

The Social Insurance Specialist (Claims Specialist) position is an intermittent role located in the West Frankfort Field Office, specifically at 1005 Factory Outlet Dr, West Frankfort, IL 62896. This position is being filled on a temporary basis, with the full performance level being GS-11. As a Claims Specialist, you will play a crucial role in the Social Security Administration (SSA) by providing direct and personal service to the public. Your responsibilities will include engaging with beneficiaries to explain their rights under Social Security laws, gathering necessary facts and evidence to establish eligibility for benefits, and making critical decisions regarding the amount of benefits paid to individuals. You will utilize advanced computer technology to access and update information about claims, ensuring that all data is accurate and up-to-date. In this role, you will conduct interviews with the public to obtain, clarify, and verify information related to initial and continuing eligibility for various benefits, including retirement, survivors, disability, health insurance, and supplemental security income. You will also be responsible for resolving discrepancies, clarifying issues, and making final decisions regarding initial and post-entitlement benefits and payments. This includes adjudicating and authorizing entitlement or disallowance actions across all levels of difficulty and complexity under programs administered by the SSA. Your ability to use state-of-the-art technology will be essential in accessing and updating claims information efficiently. The position requires U.S. citizenship and the completion of a fingerprinting and background investigation. Selectees will be required to serve a one-year probationary period. The role is classified as a bargaining unit position and is represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). As a temporary position, it is not eligible for relocation expenses, and the appointment may last up to one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year. The work schedule is intermittent, and while telework is eligible as determined by agency policy, the position is not remote. The salary range for this position is between $72,553 and $94,317 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
