About The Position

New York Edge is the largest provider of after school and summer camp programs in New York City public schools. Each year, programs in academics--including STEM, the arts, sports & wellness, and college access help 40,000 students develop leadership skills and succeed in school. Working parents count on our programs to provide safe and enriching environments for their children. New York Edge seeks a highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsible individual to fill the role of SEL Specialist. In this part-time position, you will be responsible for helping students remove or manage barriers that negatively impact their academic, social, and emotional success at school through individual or group therapy. This role reports to the Site Director. This role will also require attendance for the Leadership & SEL trainings provided by the SEL department, under the Director of Leadership & SEL.

Requirements

  • Familiarity and experience with crisis intervention and behavioral models
  • Evidence of successful counseling strategies concerning discipline, social and emotional development, substance abuse, and conflict mediation
  • Evidence of success with students who exhibit academic, social and emotional struggles, students with special needs, youth living in high poverty, and their families
  • Knowledge of or ability to make referrals for students in need of additional services or alternative placements
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
  • Thorough understanding of child development and behavior
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with colleagues, parents, students, and the community
  • Commitment to continuous professional growth (e.g., professional development, formal education, professional literature)
  • Bachelor's degree in social work (or related field such as education or psychology) required
  • 2 years experience with working with children in a school setting
  • Computer proficiency required, including Microsoft Word and Excel, email correspondence, Google Drive, and database management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide SEL support to students and families, individually and in group classes.
  • Build strong relationships with and among students
  • Implement an approved LEADERSHIP curriculum, such as guiding peer discussions to relevant leadership topics, prepare and teach daily SEL activities, and adapt teaching methods to meet community needs and interests
  • Observe child mental health needs and implement short-term, frequent, and strategic interventions to support student in program.
  • Provide strategies and work with teachers to promote social and emotional competence in the classroom
  • Participate in regular faculty development, reflective practice, professional organizations, peer coaching, and group work
  • Administer pre and post assessments and evaluations for student activities using the organizational Mosaic By ACT program
