About the position

The SOAR Nurse Externship Program is designed for RN students, specifically for the June 2025 cohort starting on June 2, 2025. This program provides continuous employment until graduation from the RN program. Nurse Externs will support nurses and other medical staff in caring for patients in a safe and compassionate manner for a minimum of three hours a week. Responsibilities include observing, documenting, and communicating patient needs and status changes to the healthcare team, providing emotional support and education to patients, and assisting with nursing practice interventions under the direction of a registered nurse. The role emphasizes quality service through a collaborative approach to patient care and promotes positive patient outcomes through inquiry and evidence-based practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic patient care including activities of daily living.
  • Aid patient care team in collection of patient data and specimens, reporting irregularities to the primary nurse.
  • Obtain urine, stool, and sputum specimens and process specimens.
  • Obtain and record health metrics, weights, vital signs, including pulse oximetry and pain level.
  • Communicate patient status and report changes in patient condition to licensed professionals.
  • Aid patient care team by performing and explaining designated patient care procedures.
  • Perform and educate patients regarding the purpose of incentive spirometry.
  • Transport patients.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic tests.
  • Perform communication liaison duties for daily patient communications with family.
  • Answer telephone promptly using excellent customer service skills.
  • Respond to patient call lights.
  • Assist with vaccine administrations.
  • Maintain and clean equipment.
  • Communicate patient and family requests to appropriate personnel immediately after receipt of request.
  • Respond to and carry out patient and family requests when appropriate.
  • Coordinate equipment/supply needs in collaboration with supply management personnel.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Currently enrolled in an ASN or BSN program.
  • Completion of one adult care clinical rotation.
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification must be completed within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position.
