About the position
The SOAR Nurse Externship Program is designed for LPN students, specifically for the June 2025 cohort starting on June 2, 2025. This program provides continuous employment until graduation from the LPN Program. Nurse Externs will support nurses and other medical staff in caring for patients in a safe and compassionate manner, committing to a minimum of three hours a month. Responsibilities include observing, documenting, and communicating patient needs and status changes to the healthcare team, providing emotional support and education to patients, and assisting with nursing practice interventions under the direction of a registered nurse. The role emphasizes quality service through a collaborative approach to patient care and promotes positive patient outcomes through inquiry and evidence-based practice.
Responsibilities
- Provide basic patient care including activities of daily living
- Assist with range of motion exercises
- Support patient ambulation
- Assist with positioning and skin care
- Provide appropriate bathing and oral hygiene
- Assist with feeding and meal delivery
- Support toileting and incontinent care
- Ensure a clean and safe working and patient environment
- Aid patient care team in collection of patient data and specimens
- Participate in Interdisciplinary rounds (IDR)
- Conduct patient rounding focusing on personal needs, pain, positioning, and personal items
- Ensure timely communication with the Central Operations Center regarding telemetry, bed alarms, and virtual sitting
- Obtain and process urine, stool, and sputum specimens
- Record health metrics including weights, vital signs, and pain levels
- Communicate patient status and report changes in condition to licensed professionals
- Perform and explain designated patient care procedures
- Educate patients regarding the purpose of incentive spirometry
- Transport patients
- Prepare patients for diagnostic tests
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent education required
- Currently enrolled in an LPN program
- Completion of one adult care clinical rotation
- AHA BLS-HCP certification must be completed within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment
- Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position
