About the position

Under general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, Associate Chief Nursing Officer and direct supervision RN-1, Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse, uses the nursing process to safely coordinate total patient care and education for an assigned number of patients. At all times, patient assignments will be determined by adjustment of department patient census and current staffing levels for the overall patient care which are reviewed shift-to-shift. As determined by the Nurse Manager, the nurse will be assigned up to 40 hours per week and may rotate between day and night shift according to the needs of the unit and staff. The nurse is expected to function within the scope of approved policies, procedures, and regulations for the department and organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with orientation, preceptorship, and management of personnel assigned to unit.
  • Document total care given and maintain patient medical records per policy.
  • Assist with accurate and timely entry of patient data, orders, and charges into computer system.
  • Assess, monitor, and manage patients developing and initiating a plan of care.
  • Administer medication and treatments as prescribed.
  • Collaborate with teams for patient care.
  • Order, evaluate, and perform diagnostic tests.
  • Conduct physical examinations and head-to-toe assessments.
  • Monitor patients' health and record relevant symptoms.
  • Maintain IV lines and monitor patients' vital signs.
  • Provide support, education, and advice to patients.
  • Educate patients about their illness, treatments, and medications.
  • Ensure the safety of patients and advocate for their needs.
  • Assist with ordering supplies and inventory.
  • Review, record, and report irregularities/problems.
  • Maintain clinical competence and knowledge of nursing care standards.
  • Administer medications safely and document adverse drug reactions.
  • Perform IV therapy and wound care according to hospital protocol.
  • Promote unit and organizational philosophy and goals.
  • Participate in organizational committees as assigned.
  • Provide information on trends related to patient outcomes to Nurse Manager.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and reinforce professional behavior of staff members.
  • Float between departments as indicated by unit needs.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Ability to work in a professional, non-defensive manner with peers and patients.
  • Knowledge of operating medical equipment.
  • Ability to educate patients about their illness and treatments.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with patients and families.
  • Ability to perform physical assessments and document findings.
  • Knowledge of medication administration and safety protocols.
  • Ability to maintain clinical competence and knowledge of nursing standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a hospital or clinical setting.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
