About The Position

The Sheet Molding Compound Process Engineer will function as the primary, technical resource for the SMC production unit. The SMC Process Engineer will collaborate with operations, research & development, and quality departments to optimize the manufacturing of SMC to be used in compression molding operations. This position will report directly to the Technical & Quality manager and will support the Exterior Operations Manager and their team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in sheet molding compound design and management within a manufacturing environment (5 years preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of SMC compression molding
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Effective communication and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles
  • SMC formulation and/or production experience
  • Compression molding experience
  • Established leadership experience
  • Proficient in data analysis through use of Excel and Minitab
  • Demonstrated ability to drive measured improvement in key areas of operations
  • Strong technical knowledge and process capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize safety in daily activities and process changes
  • Champion quality improvement initiatives
  • Manage the quality control laboratory and testing of SMC
  • Own the production line trial process and work in conjunction with R&D teams
  • Collaborate closely with hydraulic press area process engineer
  • Monitor process KPI’s and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts to increase efficiency and throughput
  • Develop and maintain documentation for SMC formulations and related testing procedures
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for SMC-related quality defects
  • Support lean manufacturing initiatives and contribute to cost reduction efforts.
