About The Position

AMA is seeking motivated and detail-oriented risk assessment Summer Intern to join our team in Moffett Field, CA supporting NASA on the Aircraft Systems and Spaceflight Engineering Support Services (ASSESS) contract at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC). Work will be in support of Advanced Air Mobility in the Smart Mobility Operational Support area. Internship would be for approximately 10 weeks over the summer of 2026. About the Projects: We are seeking a Systems Engineer to support Aeronautics Programs and Projects at NASA Ames Research Center. The Smart Mobility (SM) project enables aeronautics research involving uncrewed vehicle flight and collaborates with NASA Ames Aviation Operations Management (Code JO). SM assists with flight operations, airworthiness and flight readiness reviews, mission management, infrastructure integration, and serves as a focal point for external partners Work will be onsite at NASA Ames in Mountain View, California for the duration of the internship Pay for this position is $29.50/hr -$33.50/hr, depending on education.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree (B.S. or higher) in a physical sciences, engineering, math, or computing discipline, such as physics or astronomy; structural, mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering; statistics, applied mathematics, or computer science.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing)
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a tea.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • This position requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience building mechanical assemblies
  • Familiarity with sensors (IMU, GPS)
  • Familiarity with actuators and motor control (BLDC motors, ESCs, servos)
  • Basic understanding of UAV systems

Responsibilities

  • Intern will assist and support subject matter experts and engineers with flight testing sup-port and planning support for SM.
  • Intern requirements might include, but are not limited to supporting flight test partnerships with oversight; test infrastructure design and development; assisting the smart mobility team with integrating technologies (LSTAR radar, Passive RF sensors, etc.) into a functional airspace monitoring environment; and/or supporting flight test preparation and other supporting tasks (no flight safety critical tasks).
