Berkley Aspire is seeking a Small Business Underwriter to join its growing team. The Small Business Underwriter will be responsible for producing new business as part of an assigned territory underwriting team. This role involves managing the assigned underwriting territory to achieve profitable growth, which includes underwriting new business and marketing to our agent partners. The position can be located in our Glen Allen, VA or West Chester, OH offices, or can be performed remotely in the Southeast US. In this role, the underwriter will review and underwrite new business submissions for acceptability according to the authority granted. They will evaluate, accept, reject, or modify risks within established underwriting guidelines and authority. Compliance with company policies, procedures, and rating plans is essential when evaluating and managing risk. The underwriter will be expected to make sound risk and pricing decisions that achieve profitable loss ratios while achieving designated customer service standards with a focus on fast turnaround time. The Small Business Underwriter will participate in territory team marketing calls, video conferences, and agency visits. They will provide detailed issuance instructions to ensure policies are delivered consistent with quoted terms and conditions and in accordance with established guidelines relative to policy construction. Utilizing various underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics, accurate classifications, and insurance to value will be a key part of the role. The underwriter will also recognize and create cross-selling opportunities for other company products and actively market small commercial products to agents, traveling within the assigned territory as necessary. Continuous improvement in underwriting knowledge and skills is encouraged, which may be achieved through formal education such as AINS, ASLI, CPCU, or CIC. Overall, the Small Business Underwriter will operate according to the underwriting authority granted by Berkley Aspire, reinforcing our “ease of doing business” model by consistently meeting or exceeding expectations and service standards.
