About The Position

The Slitter/Rewind Operator is responsible for the set-up and operation of their designated machine, ensuring the accuracy and quality of the product being produced. This role also involves training new employees and maintaining compliance with all required safety procedures, food safety (GMPs), and quality policies and procedures. The operator must effectively communicate with supervisors and management, maintain a clean work area, and accurately make computer entries.

  • Ability to lift 50 – 75 pound rolls without the assistance of any hoist.
  • Ability to manipulate 100 – 300 pounds with the assistance of mechanical devices.
  • Ability to read a ruler and have other general math skills in order to measure roll diameters, roll widths, package sizes, etc.
  • Directionality to distinguish right and left sides of machinery and to follow operating instructions from other employees and from written instructions.
  • Agility (bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, etc.) in order to adjust equipment and avoid dangerous moving machinery.
  • Excellent reflexes for quick response time on moving machinery.
  • Ability to react to rapidly moving parts in order to avoid serious injury to self or others.
  • Complete alertness at all times to operate machinery in a proper manner.
  • Good sense of smell to distinguish odors from materials and smell smoke (in case of fire).
  • Good hearing to follow directions and coordinate procedures with fellow employees and to hear warning signals.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow detailed instructions without constant supervision.
  • Ability to communicate operating problems to supervisor.
  • Spatial skills, which can be applied to judge dimensions necessary for operation of machinery.
  • Mechanical ability to learn how the machine operates, including anilox rollers, cylinders, tension controls, safety mechanism, etc.
  • Ability to logically deduce (reason) the source of a problem on the slitter/rewinder, propose a solution, and carry out that solution.
  • Ability to carry out procedures in an initial sequence and repeat that procedure on future orders in a similar manner or with alterations.
  • Eyesight (whether correct or not) which distinguishes hairlines, registration, mounting accuracy and ink lay-down for print suitable quality.
  • Ability to record information electronically as required by accounting.
  • Maturity and disposition to operate safely at all times.
  • Ability to understand and implement safety emergency procedures.
  • Physical strength to stand for lengthy periods of time.
  • Ability to interact with and follow instructions from quality control or management to maintain specified quality standards.
  • Ability to do meticulous work under production demand.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all required safety procedures such as PPE’s, ergonomics, chemical hazards, etc. and perform job in a manner that protects the health and safety of all employees.
  • Read and understand job jackets/orders.
  • Establish and follow quality checking procedures in the pressroom.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor, oncoming shift, and management.
  • Perform cleanup and any other procedures related to completion of jobs.
  • Understand line clearance.
  • Keep the rewind area cleaned and clean the area at the end of the shift.
  • Stay busy when the rewind machine is down.
  • Properly make computer entries.
  • Follow the chain of command from supervisor to department manager to plant manager, etc.
  • Be at the workstation within 3 minutes of reporting time.
  • Comply with all regulatory, facility food safety, and quality policies and procedures including product safety (GMPs) policies and procedures.
