In addition, this individual documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedures, and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Demonstrates working knowledge of polysomnography, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT), oximetry and administration of supplemental O2, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP and/or BPAP) studies, and the basics of Sleep Medicine, and recognizes cardiac arrhythmia.

Requirements

  • Must be a college graduate (2 or 4 year program; major in Sleep Medicine preferred but not required)
  • 5 years of experience associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician.
  • Name: RPSGT
  • Issuing Agency: Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
  • Other than CPR/BLS, Certification - or eligibility for certification - by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists, as a Registered Polysomnographic Technician, is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and Analyzes Patient Information Reviews history, physical information, medications, procedure request, and study protocol. Communicates with the Medical Director as necessary. Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.) Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary. Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitates coring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.). Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.) Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
