About The Position

The SkillBridge Intern position is designed for active-duty service members transitioning to civilian life, specifically targeting those who will begin the program within 180 days of their separation date. This internship will take place in San Antonio, TX, where participants will serve as Middle School Math Teacher Assistants in Title 1 Schools. The role focuses on preparing students with the necessary academic and social skills to succeed in their communities. Interns will engage with the community, listen to family feedback, and align educational programs with community desires. The internship lasts for 120 days, with the possibility of extension up to 180 days, starting between August 1-15, 2025.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (Any Field) or plan to complete Bachelor's within 1 semester.
  • Commitment to working in traditionally underserved communities.
  • Ability to pass a federal background check to work with children.
  • Approval from current supervisor through SkillBridge program requirements.

  • Experience working with K-12 students in various settings such as schools, afterschool programs, or volunteering.

Responsibilities

  • Set academic expectations that challenge and create productive struggle.
  • Persist with the lesson, ask probing questions, and address student mistakes until mastery is demonstrated.
  • Implement an 80/20 classroom model where 80% of the time students are engaged in rigorous practice.
  • Convey accurate content knowledge in multiple contexts.
  • Integrate learning objectives with other disciplines.
  • Present content that reflects and affirms students' identities and global diversity.
  • Adapt lessons to meet the individual needs of all students.
  • Establish clear procedures, routines, and transitions for a safe and engaging learning environment.
  • Engage in community and restorative circles with students.
  • Build authentic trust and care for the whole child and their family.
  • Advocate for the needs of students in the classroom.
  • Meet professional standards as per the Code of Ethics and Compass Rose policies.
  • Set professional goals based on self-assessment and feedback.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Participate in student recruitment events.
  • Exemplify the mission and vision of the school.
