A skid steer/Mower operato r is a specialized role that combines the skills of a heavy equipment operator with those of a lawn care professional. "Posi-track" refers to the track system on a compact track loader, which provides superior traction and flotation on soft or uneven terrain compared to wheeled skid steers. A posi-track mower is a compact track loader with a specialized mower attachment, often used for heavy-duty brush clearing, land clearing, and large-scale mowing projects. Job Summary The skid steer operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a forestry mulcher/loader with a brush cutter or similar mower attachment. This role is crucial for land clearing, right-of-way maintenance, and large-area mowing projects in various environments, including challenging terrain. The operator must possess a strong understanding of equipment operation, maintenance, and a commitment to safety and quality work.

Requirements

  • Proven experience operating a skid steer/forestry mower or compact track loader, with specific experience using a brush cutter or mower attachment.
  • In-depth understanding of the operation, controls, and maintenance of a forestry mower and its attachments.
  • Knowledge of various types of terrain and the ability to operate the equipment safely on slopes and uneven ground.
  • Familiarity with landscaping, land clearing, or groundskeeping best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules, especially when working on or near roadways.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and other relevant regulations.
  • Exceptional hand-eye coordination and a high level of precision.
  • Excellent situational awareness and attention to detail.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify potential equipment issues.
  • Strong physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Effective communication skills to work with a team and receive instructions.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions.
  • Valid driver's license, often with a clean driving record.
  • Heavy equipment operator certification is often preferred or required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a skid steer/forestry mower with a high-performance mower attachment to clear land, cut grass, and manage vegetation in commercial, residential, or public areas.
  • Perform mowing and brush clearing tasks with precision, ensuring a clean and consistent cut while avoiding damage to obstacles, existing landscaping, or property.
  • Conduct daily pre-operational inspections and routine maintenance on the equipment, including checking fluid levels (oil, hydraulic, fuel), inspecting the tracks, and ensuring the mower attachment is in good working order.
  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions, damage, or maintenance needs to the supervisor promptly.
  • Follow all safety protocols and company policies, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and being aware of surroundings, especially in areas with potential hazards like utility lines, ditches, or uneven ground.
  • Transport equipment to and from job sites safely, which may involve loading and unloading from a trailer.
  • Collaborate with other crew members or supervisors to plan and execute tasks efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
  • Perform manual labor and other landscaping tasks as needed when not operating the equipment, such as using hand tools, string trimmers, or blowers to finish a job.
