About The Position

Assists Ski Patrol Manager in maintaining a safe skiing and biking environment by completing daily assignments and supervising patrollers. Conduct staff and safety meetings, assist with scheduling, provide care to those injured or in need of aid. Provide training opportunities. Enforce policies and procedures and ensure all safety procedures are actively in place.

Requirements

• Have a valid Driver’s license and ability to pass the Snowshoe Driving Program
• Maintain current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation card.
• Must complete the snowmobile and/or ATV (UTV) training course as well as be an approved driver on the Snowshoe Driving Program before operating a company vehicle.
• Annual snowmobile and ATV (UTV) training refresher
• Valid driver’s license to be considered for the Snowshoe Driving Program
• High School Diploma or GED
• Outdoor Emergency Care Certificate
• Senior Level Ski Patrol certificate
• 5+ years Ski Patrol experience
• Advance/Expert level skier or snowboarder
• Pay annual dues to the national ski patrol to maintain Outdoor Emergency Care certificate.
• If applicable pay annual and semiannual fees associated with maintaining First Responder or EMT license.
• Pay annual fees for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation refresher class.

Responsibilities

• Supervises daily patrol operations by completing assignments, working with staff and other departments involving operational procedures.
• Conducts Daily Staff Meetings.
• Conduct Weekly Safety Meetings.
• Involved in weekly scheduling of patrollers.
• Schedule daily duties for patrollers.
• Involved with inventory of patrol equipment.
• Involved in creating SOG’s to insure a safe skiing/riding/ and biking environment.
• Provide basic life support to our guests
• Provide information and guest service to improve the guests’ experiences.
• Maintains quality of care to those with serious and/or life-threatening injuries by training received from NSP, OEC and other necessary courses to provide basic lifesaving first aid
• Critical Incident stress response for guests and other employees
• Notifying proper medical personnel for advanced life support and transport to proper receiving facilities.
• Giving directions and maps to injured guests and family members to local hospitals or other appropriate medical facilities.
• Assist local EMS agencies as mutual aid care providers.
• Completing educational classes to become nationally recognized as an instructor.
• Assist with candidate patroller on-hill training.
• Provide Outdoor Emergency Care training.
• Provide Ski and Toboggan training.
• Informing guests of the Skiers Responsibility Act Literature, through direct communication with guests
• Enforces skier responsibility act and helps skiers by monitoring guests to make sure that they are following the Skier Responsibility Code.
• Inspect assigned slopes by skiing, riding, or snowmobile prior to morning slope opening.
• Prepare trails before opening to provide safe skiing conditions by marking hazards with signs, ropes and bamboo poles.
• Checking to see that all hydrants lift towers and other man-made objects are marked with the appropriate skier awareness devices.
• Checking the work of others.
• Responsible for disciplinary actions toward patrollers following snowshoe disciplinary policy.
• Delegating chores to be done in order of importance.
• Raising, turning, or digging out skier awareness devices
• Communication with groomers and snowmakers involving the decision to open or close trails
• Including packing snow with skis, or boards and shoveling to make trail passage possible
• Provides continual operation check on skier transport systems by observing and reporting that all ramp conditions, stop gates, signs, are satisfactory and in the proper place.
• Reporting any safety hazards, damage or excessive wear and tear on all aerial lifts and ground tows which involves having a general knowledge of the function of these machines, obtained through training and experience
• Scanning the slopes throughout the shift looking for hazards obstacles and/or areas of concern that may not have been present at opening, remedy any such situation as it arises or close the slope/trail/feature.
• Provide efficient and complete closing of open trails by completing a daily sweep skiing, riding, or on a snowmobile at the end of the day, visually scanning the sides and woods for lost or injured guests, while moving ski patrol gear in such a manner not to impede grooming and snowmaking operations.
• Have a familiarity of the Snowshoe Weather Hold Policy, and the ability to interpret a weather radar loop for the potential of inclement weather. In the event of inclement weather, guests will be transported via company vehicles. The number of guests needing transport will be determined and communicated to the ski patrol dispatcher to arrange transports with snowshoe PBX.
• Transporting or arranging transport for guests at the end of the ski day back to their desired location.
• Throughout the shift offer assistance, advice and/or directions to guests that appear to need assistance.
• Ensuring timely first-aid and care for injured by maintaining patrol dispatch when assigned.
• Receiving calls (via telephone and/or radio) and dispatching patrollers, equipment and adequate transportation to accident sites, and recording all incidents, both on paper, and in our computer database.
• Documentation of lift emergencies, weather hold, trail openings/closings, lost children, daily vehicle and snowmobile check offs.
• Notifying the right department for premise, vehicle and other maintenance needs.
• Responsible for facilities close and secure lockup of premise at the end of shifts.
• Assign house cleaning duties of the patrol facility and vehicles, vacuuming, disinfecting vehicles, dining areas and patrol medical equipment when needed.
• Assign patrollers to handsaw/chainsaw and remove leaning or fallen trees and other woody debris that pose a potential hazard to users of ski/bike trails.
• Coordinate with the bike patrol/bike park manager to assign patrol staff to assist with new trail construction, bridge building, trail maintenance, feature inspection/documentation and repair.
• Arranges transportation (via ambulance or van) for injured guests by contacting families, friends, and/or medical facilities and assisting including possibly driving the party to vehicles, condos or houses.
• Communicate specific directions for assisting EMS agencies to patient transfer areas.
• Maintains a professional standard of skiing and/or riding by skiing or riding at the National Ski Patrol System’s senior level. Skiers and riders should also be skiing or riding at the NSPS senior toboggan handling level.
• Maintain current OEC certification through attendance of an annual ski patrol refresher and payment of dues.
• Provide a guest service function at lift terminals by assisting lift attendants and mountain guides by checking tickets, and regulating riders to use the lift to its maximum efficiency
• Assisting with guest service problems utilizing the snowshoe cares program.
• Performing and assisting with Incident Investigations as requested by Management.
• Perform emergency evacuation of ski lifts by using NSAA lift evacuation techniques and following area managements lift evacuation plan.
• Involved in lift evacuation training.
• Familiarity with Snowmaking equipment. Knowledge of how to assist with snowmaking when needed.
• Contributes to Team Effort by assisting other departments to accomplishing related results as needed other duties as assigned.
• Guest complaint recovery Able to deal with guest’s complaints and actions on the hill with courtesy and compassion. And able to make the final decision with the actions we will take to resolve the situation.
• Ability to supervise an incident investigation. The patrollers taking on this assignment meets with our risk manager and other necessary personnel periodically to keep abreast of current trends in lawsuits. They take on the additional responsibility of performing our incident investigations, compiling parameters that define when an incident investigation is needed and meeting with our Risk Manager to review line items.
• Evacuation Team Leader The patroller who assumes this task is a participant in our yearly lift evacuation practice. This involves maintaining our rope log, keeping evacuation plans for both summer and winter current to meet the guidelines required by ANSI, NSAA, our area’s insurance carrier and area management. They must record rope usage, inspect the equipment for wear, order new equipment as needed and keep abreast of any upgrades in the industry.
