About The Position

Sitka Fine Arts Camp, a leader in arts education, provides interdisciplinary summer programs for kids from around the US and world. Our programs, including visual art, music, theater, dance, writing, and Alaska Native Arts, have been recognized by both the White House and the National Endowment for the Arts for excellence and innovation in arts education and community building. For more information, visit: www.fineartscamp.org. SFAC's Camp Counselors are an integral part of the campers' experience and provide support for students to grow as people and artists at camp. This job provides extraordinary experience for people interested in careers in teaching or other arts education fields. Counselors are responsible for a variety of tasks throughout the summer including student supervision and support, leading recreational activities, ensuring a safe environment for all students at camp, helping to keep dorms clean and sanitary, assisting in classes, and helping with campus setup, turnover, and cleanup. Counselors are expected to be helpful, responsible, and flexible members of the camp team and the ideal candidate is willing to assist in campus duties as needed with an enthusiastic and energetic attitude. All SFAC staff are expected to provide excellent customer service to all members of the campus community and to each other

Requirements

• At least 20 years of age by June 10, 2026
• Applicants must provide a complete application, cover letter, resume, and artistic work samples.
• Counselors are expected to maintain a drug, tobacco, and alcohol free environment while supervising students and will not store drugs, tobacco, or alcohol on campus.
• Counselors help to create an inclusive environment on campus where students feel physically and emotionally safe. They are expected to be accepting of the diverse racial, national, religious, cultural, political, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds of campers, and not seek to impose their own particular views.
• Counselors must abide by Sitka Fine Arts Camp's Employee Cell Phone Policy: Sitka Fine Arts Camp believes that students grow best personally and artistically when they are focused and engaged with the community and environment around them without outside distraction. Therefore, campers are not allowed to use cell phones at camp. While employees are allowed to use cell phones on campus, usage must remain limited, discrete, and in the spirit of the SFAC’s objectives with the student environment. Employee cell phones should always remain in silent mode or off and should be stored in the staff member’s room during the day. Cell phones may not be used during work times or when interacting with or around campers. Cell phone usage is limited to time off and breaks away from campers.

Responsibilities

• Provide supervision of students during times that they are not in classes: at meals, during recreation, in dormitories, at off-campus activities.
• Provide organized recreational activities for students each day according to schedule.
• Understand and adhere to all camp rules and Fine Arts Campus rules.
• Exhibit role-model behavior around all students.
• Maintain a safe environment for all students by anticipating inter-student conflict, ensuring equitable enforcement of rules, and observing proactive safety procedures (e.g. emergency protocols, first aid, fire drills, van transportation).
• Oversee security, safety and comfort in dormitories. To reside in the dormitory and to provide guidance to a small group of assigned students. To assist with room check-in, check-out and clean-up.
• Assist students who are upset, homesick or overwhelmed by Camp. To listen with empathy and to advocate for the needs of students. To refer students with continuing issues or acute problems to the Director of Students.
• Participate in other Camp activities on a rotational basis with other counselors: meal supervision, class assistance, evening programs, transportation, cleaning, other activities.
• Assist with campus, classroom, and dorm set-up, turnover days, and campus, classroom, and dorm cleanup.
• Other duties as assigned.
