About The Position

The Safety Officer supports all the functions of a comprehensive environmental safety health and risk program; ensuring that the project is following all federal, state, and local safety regulations. This may involve inspections, filling out government paperwork, sampling wastes and materials, and monitoring tradesmen and contractors performing project activities in all assigned facilities. The Safety Officer ensures compliance with state and federal regulations/guidelines regarding occupational safety and health and chemical wastes. The incumbent will administer programs to ensure employee safety and customer compliance with safety, health and environmental regulations for specified facilities, operations and the visiting public. Additionally, the Safety Officer will conduct accident investigations.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent GED.
  • At least three (5) years of equivalent job-related experience.
  • Possess relevant certifications to show progressive knowledge and growth in field.
  • Knowledgeable in applicable codes, standards and regulations including but not limited to EPA, MDE, OSHA, NFPA and IBC.
  • Medically and physically able and willing to wear a respirator.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
  • Ability to perform assigned work tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to identify and evaluate safety issues and recommend corrective actions to be taken.
  • Ability to pass pre-hire background and drug screen.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the required intelligence community level clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds independently and 75 pounds in a team lift.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with safety procedures through inspections, training and evaluations.
  • Conducts safety training for all levels of the organization.
  • Assists frontline management in root cause investigations and preparation of reports.
  • Coordinates safety audits and inspections and coordinates specific audit/inspection processes.
  • Participates to develop site-specific safety procedures and new safety procedures.
  • Conducts air sampling and monitoring in areas as required and generates required reports.
  • Conducts Job Hazard Analysis programs (JHA, AHA, etc.)
  • Able to identify and evaluate safety issues and recommend corrective actions to be taken.
  • Monitors all hazardous and non-hazardous materials used by company to include, but not limited to: procurement, receiving, storage, use and disposal.
  • Acts as an integral member of the Spill Response Team.
  • Operates customer and company owned motor vehicles and/or other equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in applicable codes, standards and regulations including but not limited to EPA, MDE, OSHA, NFPA, and IBC.
  • Supports snow team and other department staff as needed or directed with a requirement of overtime and adjusted schedules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
