About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent at the Mt. Vernon Game Farm for the Office of Land Management. This position will operate trucks, tractors, mowers, and other equipment; prepare detailed technical reports to assess the effectiveness of new or existing game farm disease control programs; prepare administrative forms and record keeping essential to the operation of the farms such as mortality reports, grain reports, weight gain and physical measurements of birds; assign hunters to hunting areas; supervise planting and cultivation of wildlife food plots; trap and transport pheasants to sites where hunts are conducted; oversee buildings, picking up trash, and cleaning toilets within the park; supervise and schedule mowing, weed eating, and chemical application for aesthetics within the day use areas. The Mt. Vernon Game Farm's topography is rolling, with a wide range of diverse habitats. These include, timbered hills, prairie grass, and old field patches, ponds, creek bottoms, and agricultural fields. This area also includes two smaller ponds and an 8 acre wetland and creek that flows through the south side of the property. Requirements

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in parks and recreation, natural resource administration or public administration.
  • Requires one year’s related functional supervisory experience.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide and/or herbicide applicator’s license within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year-round basis.
  • Ability to lift and transport loads which may exceed sixty pounds, and to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to administer First Aid/CPR and maintain certification.
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings and grounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including pheasant propagation, animal handling, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and outdoor recreation programs.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the brooding, specking, and inoculation of poultry.
  • Two (2) years of experience in applying appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Two (2) years of experience in evaluating program effectiveness and to make recommendations on policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, and/or carpentry trades to make repairs on site.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, serves as a working supervisor.
  • Supervises and participates in maintenance of buildings, flight pens, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Monitors and utilizes professional expertise in the evaluation of pheasant rearing methods.
  • Assists with pheasant hunting program and other special hunts.
  • Provides input and gathers data for preparation of the annual and seasonal plans of work.
  • Coordinates and facilitates day use activities on the park.
  • Assumes responsibilities of the Site Superintendent in the absence thereof.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
