About The Position

The Simulation & Laboratory Technician at Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine will play a key role in supporting a variety of experiential learning sessions for medical students. The Technician will work closely with faculty and staff from clinical skills, simulation, ultrasound, and anatomy to develop and run learning sessions. The Technician plays a critical role in the operations and seamless delivery of learning labs while working with students, faculty, staff, guests, and vendors to support the overall function of the school.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or combination of education and experience (simulation, information technology, etc.).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.) is required. Experience with Laerdal SimCapture, Toltec, Surgical Science, and Canvas are preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and maintain a high level of professionalism.
  • Ability to work on a flexible schedule. This position may require occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position (MU policy) Ability to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation as required by Methodist University policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in healthcare simulation is strongly preferred.
  • Licensure or certification in a health profession (EMT, RN, PA, etc.) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the functionality, maintenance, and security of simulation, anatomy, ultrasound, and laboratory equipment.
  • Repair and maintain equipment as required or initiate repairs for equipment under warranty.
  • Maintain maintenance schedules, warranties, and vendor contracts.
  • Communicate with vendors regarding maintenance, updates, repairs, and warranties.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment, supplies, hardware, and software.
  • Initiate the ordering process for supplies to ensure availability prior to scheduled learning events.
  • Meet with faculty to develop learning events while ensuring equipment, supplies, logistics, and technical needs are met.
  • Collaborate with Academic Coordinators and Clinical Skills Coordinator to ensure appropriate room reservations are made and confirmed prior to learning events.
  • Collaborate with the Cape Fear Valley Simulation Center on scheduling space and equipment.
  • Oversee event space set-up and take-down.
  • Manage and maintain proficiency with multiple technological platforms for courses (Laerdal SimCapture, Toltec, Surgical Science, Canvas, etc.).
  • Program simulators with faculty-developed scenarios and operate according to scenario and script during simulation events.
  • Operate SimCapture recording system during Standardized Patient encounters and OSCEs.
  • Provide support during learning events.

  • Identify and implement solutions to problems related to simulation equipment, task training equipment, anatomy equipment, computer hardware, and software.
  • Complete initial and ongoing equipment and software training to gain and maintain proficiency with equipment and software.
  • Gain and advance knowledge and skills in healthcare simulation by attending workshops and conferences.
  • Collaborate with simulation faculty and staff to develop and implement best practices in simulation and support the Cape Fear Valley Simulation Center's initiative of achieving accreditation by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
  • Manage requests for simulation events, equipment, and supplies.
  • Crosstrain faculty and staff members as needed to operate simulation and laboratory equipment.
  • Meet regularly with other members of the foundational sciences and clinical skills and simulation team to coordinate events and collaborate on shared responsibilities.
  • Assist with special events and workshops, such as orientation, white coat ceremony, commencement, and various student, faculty, and staff events/workshops. This position may require occasional evening and weekend work for special events.
  • Assist with special projects, including accreditation, grant projects, and community outreach.
