About The Position

General Definition: The silks clerk organizes, prepares and cleans all aerodynamic and traditional silks, which identify owners and stables during races. Essential Job Functions: Maintains records of all silks delivered to the jocks room Organizes the silks on a rack labeled by race number and rider numbers. Ensures proper silks are hung for each owner and each race for jockeys to wear Checks, cleans and maintains all Silks, towels and helmet covers Examine and sort into lots articles to be cleaned, according to color, fabric, dirt content, and cleaning technique required for aerodynamic and traditional silks Close all Velcro to avoid damage to nylon fibers Determine spotting procedures and proper solvents, based on fabric and stain types. Mix and add detergents, dyes, bleaches, starches, and other solutions and chemicals to clean, color, dry, or stiffen articles. Load articles into washers or dry-cleaning machines Start washers, dry cleaners, driers, or extractors, and turn valves or levers to regulate machine processes and the volume of soap • Remove items from washers or dry-cleaning machines Sort and count articles removed from dryers, and fold, wrap, or hang them. Mend and sew articles, using hand stitching, adhesive patches, or sewing machines. Clean machine filters, and lubricate equipment as required by manufacture standards Return silks to proper locations at the end of race day night. Responsible for cleaning the jockey’s room between and after races Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Operational knowledge of industrial laundry equipment
  • Ability to identify fabrics, and proper cleaning procedures for racing silks
  • Basic understanding of regulatory requirements of horse racing
  • Strong written, oral communication and leadership skills required.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Skill in data entry with minimal errors.
  • Operational Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products
  • Work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Demonstrated ability on completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to be resourceful to aid in horsemen’s requests
  • Ability to work a flexible and irregular schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays
  • Ability to enter a smoke-filled environment as needed
  • Must be able to pass Title 31 Training
  • 1-2 Years of Laundry and Clothing experience
  • 0-1 years inventory systems experiences
  • 1-2 years with horse racing operations.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and receive a license or permit from any Regulatory Agency if applicable to perform the essential job functions
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug test with a negative result

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with Race Track Manager software preferred
