About The Position

Assist the Signal Maintainer in those duties necessary to construct, install, repair, maintain, test and inspect railroad signal systems. The signal systems include automatic block signal systems, traffic control systems, train stop, train control and cab signal systems, interlocking systems, rail-highway grade crossing protection and other similar devices and appliances.

Requirements

  • Electrical experience highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Primary job duties initially entail physical labor performed outdoors
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in inspection, testing and maintenance of batteries to insure proper operation
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in inspection and testing of signal circuitry
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in replacing defective components, wiring, broken lenses or light bulbs
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in cleaning signal equipment including signs and lenses with cloths and solvents
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in lubricating moving parts on mechanical equipment
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in inspecting, testing and maintenance of signal equipment such as grade crossing warning devices, power switches and switch air unit controllers
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in installing, testing and maintaining retarder systems
  • Assist the Signal Maintainer in performing wide range of construction, installation, maintenance and repair activities requiring frequent use of hand tools
  • General laborers’ duties as necessary
  • Bending and stooping to gather materials, inspect track and circuits, handling tools and painting
  • Squatting while using jacks or drilling holes in rail to install wires
  • Crouching and kneeling while welding, installing signals or servicing batteries; examining wire connections or testing circuits
  • Climbing extension ladders
  • Carry and lifting wrench, pick and shovel to dig ditches and other general laborer duties
  • Walking regularly on ballast and other uneven surfaces
