About The Position

Performs sign layout production of standardized and special signs using computer and design software or other appropriate processes for the City of Sherwood. This position is responsible for repair and general maintenance of traffic signals and controls within the City of Sherwood.

Requirements

  • High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area, e.g., data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc.
  • Three years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in sign production, including sign design with use of computer software; application of reflective sheeting and installation.
  • Skill in the operation of a microcomputer, utilizing spreadsheet and traffic engineering software.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal.
  • Must constantly lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and occasionally may be asked to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, type and enter data accurately.
  • Ability to effectively communicate on a one-on-one basis with others.
  • Ability to maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees, department officials and the public.
  • Ability to report to work each scheduled day, and on time.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and fabricates traffic signs and special signage using commercial software and operates computer-driven cutter/plotter.
  • Cuts standard sized letters from reflective material sheets; hand-cuts special sized letters and/or characters and applies letter and/or characters to street name markers and other information signs.
  • Chooses type style, positions letters in composing stick, and clamps it on bed of manual platen press that prints sign in one operation.
  • Selects and mixes color.
  • Applies reflective sheeting to signs.
  • Operates spray painting equipment to paint backgrounds on 'sign blanks', repaint pavement markings, signposts, and traffic signal heads; applies lettering and reflective materials to pavement markings and signposts.
  • Ensures an adequate supply of commonly used traffic control signs is maintained.
  • Monitors inventory of all supplies necessary for sign fabrication; notifies the supervisor when stock needs replenishing.
  • Coordinates assignments and makes decisions regarding sign requests.
  • Installs signs in specified location.
  • Operates a bucket truck as needed for installing, repairing, or removing overhead signs on roadway and traffic signals.
  • Retrieves, completes, and closes work orders.
  • Digs holes as necessary to properly install standing signs.
  • Works with cleaning fluids, chemicals, inks, paints, or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work successfully in extreme hot and/or extreme cold temperatures; excessive humidity; slippery and uneven walking surfaces, excessive noise, and other extreme conditions such as noxious fumes, moving heavy machinery, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and/or required.
